I dropped it on an acceptable time. It was just so dragged out imo. Every page felt like it was just the author practicing imagery. The pacing was bad too. Every other book tho(besides many waters) was a 10/10

Hi SarahAnne: I just wrote you a comment but the local powers of electronic gremlinlike hatred ate it before I could post it...making me think that the powers of Good would really like us to at least exchange comments! So, nevertheless, I will persist and try again to write a comment. I just finished listening to An Acceptable Time on audiobook, a book I only learned existed and read for the first time this past autumn. I had moved to New England despite the pandemic and was starting a work from home job under the pandemic lock-down, and needed a good book, so I got An Acceptable Time at the store on my rare excursions outside the house, to read in my down time. So I read the book for the first time this past autumn while living in New England, about an hour's drive from the location in Connecticut where the story is set. That made it even more enjoyable. And I just listened to the story on audiobook again, on youtube. So you and I don't share the same tastes in Time Quintet favorites. My favorite is An Acceptable Time and second favorite would be A Swiftly Tilting Planet. But we do share a different trait I saw that you listed on your website, that of speaking in full sentences at 18 months. (You know, of course, what that says about your DQ, at least for language.) Reading An Acceptable Time mainly made me wish I had gotten to meet Madeline L'Engle as an adult. She passed away, I remember hearing on the news reports, only a few days after I had given a copy of A Wrinkle in Time as a present to one of my mentors in residency/fellowship to give to his kid. She was six years old, and like her father and you and me, had been speaking in full sentences since the age of 18 months. And he was a neurologist and clinical neuroscientist, like me, and was mentoring me, and it seemed (to me, anyway) that like Dr. Murray in the book, it was as though a Giant Metaphorical Brain had kidnapped him and taken him away from his wife and kids for too many hours of the day, with the metaphor of the Giant, All-Devouring, Evil Brain standing for his job at the university teaching and doing neurology bench work and clinical service. Hence my choice of present for him and his daughter, as a "thank you" present for his mentoring me as a new resident in the program. So the book I chose for his daughter was a symbol I used instead of singing him that last verse of the folk song "Good Night, Irene." I really liked him as a friend and protege, but you can't really say those things to people until you know them way the heck longer than I had known this guy, my professor. So I gave him A Wrinkle in Time to read to his daughter as my thank you gift, instead, to show my appreciation for his mentoring and friendship. (Giving kids' books and plates of cookies and baby seedling flowers for the professors' wives' gardens has always been my way of negotiating the perilous situation of being a female physician-scientist in a world where there are still a few guys out there with a "quid pro quo" mentality. So the "quid" that they and that female mentors get is always the same: books for their kids, seedlings for their gardens, plates of home-made cookies at Christmastime, and if I really like them, both a Unicef calendar AND a plate of cookies at Christmas. This tradition dates back to middle school, when any teacher who had given me an A would get a plate of Christmas cookies from my household. Anyone who suggests some other kind of "quid pro quo" to me, say, in the context of a job interview, gets his number deleted and blocked from my phone, so he can't offer me the job even if he wanted to. By contrast, any one who publishes a paper with me, gets to be on the Christmas Cookie list For Life. As much as I appreciate the talent of that young Mr. Farrow, his New Yorker articles about Harvey Weinstein and Black Cube were too little, nearly three decades too late, for my generation of women scientists.) So my question to ask you is this: Did YOU ever get to meet Madeline L'Engle in person? If so, did you like her? What was she like? Since your hair looks reddish in your video, I am surprised you didn't like the story about Poly O'Keefe as much as the others, because she's a redhead, too, and her red hair figures in the story. When I was younger, I really did wear my hair in a long, thick braid down my back, like Anaral, as I used to hike through the woods and ride my bicycle alone, down deserted country roads near my home, eyes closed, hands free, balancing to feel the wind in my face, with nobody needing to hold ME up as I rode on my own home turf. But I don't find it offensive that there's a character who looks a little like me in one of L'Engle's books. (Though I'm neither Hispanic nor Native American in my background, and likely have no more New World Blood in me than Senator Warren! Like Senator Warren and many people with that big, toothy smile that comes from Oyster Bay, New York, I do likely have a touch of Oyster Bay blood, and that ancestral line likely has some New World DNA in it, though I did not luck out and get the beautiful Oyster Bay Eyes that so many people have, the smiley, Asian looking eyes that people like our new U.S. President were born with.) Is that an aspect of An Acceptable Time that you don't like, Poly's having red hair being too much like your own looks? Or is it some other factor? You didn't really say in your video why that book came in last in your ranking of the series' five books. So my question is, Did you ever get a chance to meet the real Madeline L'Engle when she was alive, and if so, what was she like?

Hello Sarah. I am an aspiring screen writer and filmmaker. I am really looking for some good spy books, which are not cold but very interesting in terms of intensity and momentum of events. For example, global terrorist who wants to blow half the world for balance, an interesting Ethan Hunt kind of Protagonist. I am just looking for material which can draw inspiration for commercial movie. Can you suggest me something?

I loved A swiftly tilting planet and Many Waters. I didnt really love An Acceptable Time, a lot of things that was said was repeated many times and I didn't enjoy that. I know that it takes place in the Polly O'Keefe Quintent instead of The Wrinkle in Time Quartet so I'm hoping I get more of her when I finish that. Meg isnt really my favorite character so reading A Wind in the Door wasn't my favorite either.

Thanks for the fascinating review. I've adored "Wrinkle" and have reread it many times since discovering it in 5th grade. Sadly, I could never really get into the later books in the series, since I've always thought that, while "Wrinkle" is essentially perfect, and I love the premise of a science-minded family that fantastical things happen to, the other books were rambling and muddled compared to the crisp and straightforward "Wrinkle." One special feature of L'Engle, by the way, is her excellent beginnings. She captures the reader's attention right away, even if what follows isn't always up to par. Having said that, many of her other books, like "The Arm of the Starfish," are quite good, as is her Austins series, and her "Ring of Endless Light" is probably my favorite YA novel of all time. One of her earliest books, "Camilla," from the early 50s, is basically a female version of "Catcher in the Rye"!

I use my Kindle Paperwhite because it makes reading much easier for me having two babies. My library does not have a drop off so I have to go in to return them and to check out books, I'm rushed after 5 minutes by baby cries and screams. I can't buy books because that's just not affordable for me. An app on my phone allows me to check books out from my library onto my Kindle and I can read in PEACE

I haven't got a 'kindle' but I do have a kobo ereader it is much lighter than carrying around heavy books you can adjust the size font spacing as well as lighting. You can also get lots of free reoding material. I think you are not right comparing an ereader with other electronic devices they are tailored to reading offline. But I understand you prefer physical books, some like reading off their tablet or their phone.

i think its easy to forget that Todd is essentially just a child, and the journey/obstacles he faces are something that some adults may not even have been able to face. i agree that he can be whiny and desperate to find out what the history of Prentisstown really is, but if we step back and look at the bigger picture, he is the only boy who doesn't seem to know and is disconnected from the rest of town purely because he's not old enough to know. i agree with most aspects of this review! also with the Aaron thing, i think he is an ongoing metaphor Ness uses to show that as much as Todd and Viola want to outrun their problems, it always catches up to them regardless of how much they want to get rid of it. Moreover the fact that Viola is the one that ultimately kills him adds to the fact that Todd is still a child and 'pure' in a sense. great review! loved it :)

I LOOOOOVE this! I think sometimes goodreads, booktube, (social media platforms in general) make people feel guilty because their choices are so public. It's sparked discussions like never before. It's silly, but I fall into that trap. It's ridiculous that we care what others think about the books we choose. "You read you," is great! I have to disagree on the kids seeing parents with books makes them more interested in reading thing. Neither of my parents are readers. They read about 1 book every 2 or 3 years, yet I can read 5 to 7 books in a week. I wasn't raised in a reading environment, I just gravitated towards books.
